Thailand Ranks 44th in the Global Innovation Index 2026: What Does This Mean for IP and Businesses?

Thailand has ranked 44th among 139 economies in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index (GII) 2026, while ranking 3rd among upper middle-income economies, according to the latest announcement by the Thai Department of Intellectual Property (DIP).

Beyond the overall ranking, several indicators provide an interesting picture of Thailand’s innovation landscape. Thailand ranks 6th globally in creative goods exports, 8th in high-tech exports and 7th in research talent. From an IP perspective, Thailand ranks 5th globally for utility model applications by origin for the third consecutive year, while its ranking for industrial design applications by origin improved to 30th globally, rising four places from the previous year.

From Innovation to Commercial Value

For businesses, however, the significance goes beyond the rankings.

The latest results highlight Thailand’s existing strengths in innovation, creative output, technology development and IP creation. The next opportunity is to ensure that these strengths are translated into protected and commercially valuable intellectual property.

Innovation alone does not necessarily create long term business value. Businesses should consider how their innovations, brands, designs and technologies are identified and protected; whether their IP portfolios align with their commercial objectives; and how those rights can ultimately be commercialized, licensed and effectively enforced.

This becomes increasingly important as Thai businesses expand into overseas markets and international businesses develop, manufacture and commercialize products and technologies in Thailand and the wider ASEAN region. An effective IP strategy therefore needs to look beyond obtaining registrations in a single jurisdiction and consider where protection is commercially important, which forms of IP protection are appropriate and how those rights support the business’s wider regional and commercial strategy.

The DIP has also indicated that it intends to work with the National Innovation Agency (NIA), WIPO experts and other stakeholders to further strengthen Thailand’s innovation and IP ecosystem, connecting the creation and research and development of innovation with IP protection and, ultimately, commercial utilization.
