Thailand: An Overview of Trademark Filing and Registration in Thailand for 2024

In this article, we would like to provide you with an outlook of trademark filing and registration in Thailand for the year of 2024, based on the latest available official statistics from the Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property.

In 2024, a total of 48,913 trademark applications were filed, representing the highest volume in the last five years. There was an increase of approximately 5.6% as compared to applications filed in 2023. The number of trademark application filings in Thailand had dipped slightly during the COVID years of 2021-2022 before recovering in 2023 and 2024.

Out of the trademark applications filed in 2024, 56.88% of the applications were from domestic applicants in Thailand while 43.12% were of foreign applicants, with the highest volume from China (56.12%), followed by the United States (16.25%), Japan (12.98%), South Korea (8.69%) and Singapore (5.96%). These top filers remain the same as 2023, but China has chalked an increase in filings compared to the previous year.

For domestic applicants, 70% are based in Bangkok, a reflection of the capital’s dominance in Thailand’s economic and business activities.

The bulk of the new applications are via the domestic route (approximately 85.21%) with the remainder of the applications filed via the Madrid System designating Thailand. An interesting trend to note is that the number of applications filed via the Madrid System in 2024 is the lowest in the past five years as there appears to be preference of filing via the national system.

As for marks registered, a total of 30,318 trademark registrations were granted in 2024. This figure is markedly lower than the preceding two years (12.31% lower than 2023 and 18.26% lower than 2022).
